Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time with the NCAA Division 1 Louisville Cardinals volleyball team in Louisville, Kentucky. As a former player with a European background and experience with Mount Royal University Cougars in Canada, I was excited to see how athletic preparation, coaching dynamics, and team culture differed between Canada and the U.S. The week was transformative, not just for the knowledge I gained, but for the sense of connection, respect, and camaraderie that the team extended to me.
A Chance to Learn from the Best
This unique experience was made possible thanks to Dan Meske, the associate head coach, whom I connected with over the past year. Through following Dan’s insightful posts on Instagram, I could already tell how dedicated he is to his role and his players. We both agreed it would be invaluable for me to see the team’s environment firsthand, especially given my own ambitions as a coach. And so, the journey began—an eye-opening dive into the standards of Division 1 volleyball and the meticulousness with which the Louisville Cardinals operate.
A Warm Welcome and Unforgettable First Impressions
From the moment I arrived, the Cardinals welcomed me as if I were part of their family. The players radiated a unique blend of energy, kindness, and confidence that truly defined the team’s spirit. They’re not just athletes; they’re individuals who have been carefully chosen not only for their talent but also for their character. It was immediately evident that the coaching staff, led by head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, has developed a recruitment process that brings together individuals who respect, support, and motivate one another.
Dani’s presence on the court is something to behold. Her kindness and approachability make it easy to understand why players are eager to work hard under her leadership. The positive energy that she and her staff bring to every practice and interaction is magnetic, and I found myself inspired by their commitment to a team culture that fosters genuine connection.
A Coaching Style Built on Collaboration
One of the most striking aspects of the Louisville Cardinals’ approach is their coaching philosophy. Rather than adhering to a traditional, top-down approach, the coaches foster a collaborative environment where every player’s voice is valued. They encourage open dialogue, inviting players to share insights and perspectives, which strengthens the team’s cohesion. This style of coaching is something I’ve rarely seen to this degree and was truly inspiring to witness.
Throughout the practices, Dani and her staff lead with an openness that fosters respect and trust. Each coach brings unique strengths to the table, setting an example of unity and shared purpose. Watching them communicate with the players, whether it was through constructive feedback, drills, or real-time analysis, demonstrated how deeply invested they are in the team’s success—both on and off the court.
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Real-Time Feedback
A major highlight of my time with the team was seeing their hands-on approach to practice, supported by innovative technology. The gym is equipped with a large screen that provides live video feedback during practices. Players can instantly review their movements, analyze their technique, and make adjustments on the spot—a tool that undoubtedly speeds up their progress. This immediate feedback loop reinforces the players’ sense of responsibility and investment in their improvement. It was fascinating to see how technology can play such a crucial role in development, something I’m excited to incorporate into my own coaching practice.
Learning the Standards of NCAA Division 1
Being immersed in the NCAA Division 1 environment revealed so much about the standards that U.S. teams uphold, both for their athletes and for the coaches guiding them. The Louisville Cardinals set a high bar, not only in terms of athletic skill but in the values they uphold as a team. Witnessing the level of discipline, dedication, and mutual respect among the players and staff gave me a new perspective on what it means to cultivate a top-tier program. I left with a deep understanding of the commitment required to help players reach this standard, and it’s a benchmark that will influence my approach to training and preparing athletes for success.
Building Friendships and Expanding My Network
Beyond the professional insights, the experience was personally enriching. I formed genuine connections with both players and coaches, and I’m grateful to now call many of them friends. There’s something special about being welcomed into an environment where everyone’s united by a shared goal and a commitment to excellence. These connections have expanded my network and will be invaluable as I continue my journey as a coach, working to guide and inspire the next generation of athletes.
Reflecting with Gratitude
This week with the Louisville Cardinals has left me with a lasting sense of gratitude. I’m thankful for the chance to witness a team that embodies so much more than just winning games. They represent passion, respect, and the strength of unity. It’s an experience I’ll carry with me, both as a coach and as a person, and I’m excited to apply these lessons to my own coaching, helping young athletes reach their potential while fostering a supportive and cohesive team culture.
Thank you, Louisville Cardinals volleyball, for this unforgettable opportunity and for opening my eyes to the standards of excellence you uphold. And thank you, Dan and Dani, for welcoming me into your world with open arms. Here’s to the friendships made, the lessons learned, and the bright future of volleyball on both sides of the border!
